EAGLE — The Bishop Kelly Knights finished off their incredible postseason run with an 8-6 win in the state lacrosse championship game, Saturday, over Gonzaga Prep.
“Everybody is best friends and that’s tough to do especially at BK because everyone is from all over the valley, but everybody knows each other,” said, senior Middie, Jesse Rohr. “Everybody cares about each other so, I think its a pretty big deal especially after losing in the first round the past couple years. Just a good start for the program. It feels pretty good.”
The Knights got on the board early and often scoring four goals in the first quarter and another in the second to take a 5-2 halftime lead.
Early in the third quarter Jesse Rohr added to BK’s lead with his second goal of the game to make it a 6-2 game.
Later in the third Patrick Tunison assisted on Rohr’s third and final goal of the game to make it a 7-3 score, but GP would finish the quarter with a flurry with three unanswered goals to make it 7-5 after three quarters.
The Bishop Kelly defense stiffened in the final quarter, thanks in large part to the play in goal of senior Craig Patrick who made several outstanding saves.
Antonio Urquidi had the one and only tally for the Knights in the final quarter to extend BK’s lead to 8-5.
Gonzaga Prep added a late goal to make it 8-6, but that would be how the game would end.
This is Bishop Kelly’s first ever state title in lacrosse.
“Especially after like all the years before us,” said senior Craig Patrick. “Being the first ones, its great because for the seniors there’s no better way to go out than to get the state championship. It’s just awesome!”
The victory also meant Bishop Kelly swept the state lacrosse championships with victories in both the boys and girls events.
